Today, Microsoft revealed a sneak preview of the newest free email service on the internet, Outlook.com, which brings together features from the quite dated Hotmail email service and also features from Exchange, a favorite for people who are unfamiliar with Gmail.
Outlook.com is integrated with Microsoft’s Windows and Office but also is user friendly with Twitter, Facebook, Gmail and LinkedIn contacts. So far Microsoft has not confirmed Skype integration any time soon, but we are hoping that we at some point we will be able to launch Skype video calls from inside our Outlook.com inbox without having to use the Skype app.
Outlook.com has a very modern look which is clean and easy to get your head around.
As the name Hotmail is going slowly out of fashion, Microsoft has brought Outlook.com out at a very good time, Hotmail users do not have to change to Outlook.com straight away but we guess Microsoft with pull the plug on Hotmail at some point and everyone will have to change to Outlook.com.
All hotmail.com users and/or live.com users can become an Outlook.com user by clicking ‘Upgrade to Outlook.com’ in the options menu. (It’s not recommended to upgrade hotmail.com and live.com accounts from mobile devices – please use a PC). Everyone else can create a new Outlook.com account from the official website.
As with most new big free email services these days they all come with some sort of cloud space, Microsoft is offering new Outlook.com users 7GB of free cloud storage space with SkyDrive. All users will continue to be encouraged to upload files and photos to SkyDrive instead of sending an attachment, this is something Microsoft has been encouraging Hotmail users to do for some time.
From the Mail app in Outlook.com users of windows devices will be able to choose which mail client they would like to use, one of the default chooses will be Outlook.com. And also on other mobile devices and phones the support Exchange ActiveSync, Outlook.com will also be a supported mail option.
